40% C-section rate?????

A good friend of mine sent me this great article that was published in the Poughkeepsie Journal this week. It's well worth your read, and sadly, 99.9% of all other hospitals out there are the same. And it's getting worse. Oddly enough, I went to this medical center's website and this is how they advertise their services:

Designed to Deliver

We've built the Mid Hudson region's most advanced maternity facility.

Ask today's mothers-to-be what they want for their childbirth experience, and the answers are as different as the women themselves. On one issue, however, they are in agreement. They want to be in control of their pregnancy, labor and delivery.

In other words, they want choices - about who delivers their baby, how they manage their pain, their position during labor and childbirth, and who is present the moment their child is born.

Sounds great, huh? Well, of course, actions speak louder than words and in my experience when the rubber met the road, let's just say that I don't think they really cared about my choices. This is such great timing since I'm just putting the finishing touches on the story of my journey with this very hospital and I can't wait to share.

A Doula Story

I found this on another blog, but just had to highlight it myself as well.

A Doula Story documents one African American woman’s fierce commitment to empower pregnant teenagers with the skills and knowledge they need to become confident, nurturing mothers. Produced by The Kindling Group, a Chicago-based nonprofit organization, this powerful film follows Loretha Weisinger back to the same disadvantaged Chicago neighborhood where she once struggled as a teen mom. Loretha uses patience, compassion and humor to teach “her girls” about everything from the importance of breastfeeding and reading to their babies, to communicating effectively with health care professionals.

Participants needed for study: Sexual Abuse and Infant Feeding Choices

I received this survey and wanted to pass it along. The goal of the study is to provide valuable insight into the choices that mothers make in feeding their children, and whether there is any correlation to prior sexual abuse in the mother.

Anyone who is a mother may participate, regardless of whether she was a victim of abuse or how she chose to feed her baby. In addition, mothers who have a child who is deceased, whether in childhood or as an adult, can still answer the appropriate questions in the feeding section.

The survey is very brief and will be available until February 28, 2009.

Details:

Hello. My name is Jennifer Fegan-Szalay and I am conducting a research study on childhood sexual abuse and infant feeding choices.

This survey is being conducted in preparation for a college thesis research paper. I am a Bachelor's student at the National College of Midwifery. In preparing for this assignment, I found that there is only minimal research on this specific topic and wanted to conduct my own research. I am hoping that this small study will provide some valuable insight into the choices that mothers make in feeding their children, and whether there is any correlation to prior sexual abuse in the mother. This survey is completely confidential. No names or identifying information is collected. Any personally identifying information (names, locations, etc.) you choose to provide in the course of completing the survey will be kept strictly confidential and will not be included in the final report or released to anyone. Names and personal information will be changed if anecdotal information is included in the thesis paper.Anyone who is a mother may participate, regardless of whether she was a victim of abuse or how she chose to feed her baby. In addition, mothers who have a child who is deceased, whether in childhood or as an adult, can still answer the appropriate questions in the feeding section.

Please click on the link below to access the survey. It will only take a few minutes for most participants to complete. Also, if you know of anyone who may be interested in helping out by participating, please feel free to forward on this e-mail. All I ask is that if you do, especially if you choose to forward to a group or list, please CC me so I am aware of which groups were contacted. My e-mail is jfeganszalay@nycap.rr.com.

Anyone wishing to receive a paper version of this survey can contact me and I will be happy to provide one.
